You can take the bus, it’s much quicker, but this is “a thing to do” and so you should do it. This is the budget route on the Mekong River from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai or return is pretty enjoyable !

7:15 - 7:45 AM Being picked up from your hotels in Luang Prabang city centre to Slow Boat Dock.
8:30 AM Slow boat leave the Luang Prabang Dock for pak beng, on the way there will be alot of pictures of the beauty on both side of the river.
Day 2: Pak Beng to Huay Xai Cruise
You can easily find the right boat simply by asking for Huay Xai and will be pointed onwards and grab a seat.
Today you will arrive into Huay Xai around 16:30
The Huay Xai Slow Boat Pier is a short way out of the main “town” and there are tuk tuks available. you can go to your booked hotel or go to Laos Thai Border within 5-7 minutes to check in to Thailand!

=> There are no lunch stops on this trip, it takes a full day to head upriver to Pakbeng, so we advise to bring a packed lunch. At Pakbeng, where you disembark after the first day., you find somewhere to stay for the night. in the morning you head back to the boat dock to head north from Pakbeng to Huay Xai. There’s a small shop on board, where they’ll sell you a pot of noodles, instance coffee, and a bag of potato chips. Take your lunch with you, buy it from Luang Prabang (and from Pakbeng on morning two).
=> Bags may need to go at the back of the boat in a covered in area (so please keep your valuables with you)
=> Mostly the entertainment is when the boat stops to offload the local Lao travelers, who’ve clearly been shopping in Luang Prabang.

The fast boats go straight through and get you to Huay Xai in a single day. Probably deaf, and hopefully not wrapped around a rock, but you’ll be there in a day.
